BEING baptized into God’s kingdom at the 10:30 a.m. service is Nakova June Eskola, infant daughter of Andrew and Jennifer (Hanisch) Eskola. “To, You, Lord, this child we bring. Receive her, Shepherd, to Your fold that she to You in faith may cling.”

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES. On Sundays, there are Sunday School classes available for PK-7th grade. Pastor Newton leads a youth (8th-12th) Bible study from 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Adults can join Pastor Neubauer in the social hall for a look through the Catechism. Sarah Newton leads a women’s Bible Study, “Pew Sisters” in the library. On Tuesdays, Pastor Neubauer leads a class on Luke in the library at 8:30 a.m. Pastor Knaack leads a class in the library for a study on “Forgiveness in the Age of Rage” on Wednedays at 10:30 a.m.

PASTOR NEUBAUER has a been reading “Upside-Down Spirituality” and decided start a Monday noon book club to discuss it. The group will meet for four weeks beginning September 16 at noon in Pastor Neubauer’s office. You can bring your lunch. Pick up your copy of the book and read the introduction which will be the focus of the first meeting.

A SIX WEEK  adult instruction course will be lead by Pastor Neubauer on Wednesdays from September 18 to October 23, 6:30-8:00 p.m. This class is for anyone wanting to learn more about the Lutheran faith, but is especially geared toward new members. Please sign up on the sheet by the church office.

LOOKING for an easy way to help ABC? If you don’t use the Holiday Station coupons that come in the paper, drop them off here at church. We can use them to purchase milk. Thank you!

CONFIRMATION MENTORS are needed for the new 7th grade class. Please contact one of the pastors or Connie Fondow if you have questions or would like to consider becoming a mentor.

NEXT SUNDAY we will take a special door offering following each service to help purchase a bajaj (a three wheeled vehicle, strong, cheap to run, can carry three passengers, cargo and travel in remote areas where four wheel vehicles are unable to travel) for church workers in Gambella, Ethiopia who travel among the refuge camps there. The vehicle costs $10,000 and they are currently short $8,000. This request came from Pastor Bernie Lutz, a former member here, who travels often to Africa to teach at the seminary there. His request closes with this, “As I begin my 86th year, it is a great joy to present ANOTHER MISSION CHALLENGE to you...in Jesus’ name!!” 

ALL LADIES ARE INVITED to a mini retreat, The Game of Life, on Saturday, September 21 starting at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran in Walker. You can register on the sheet on the LWML board in the hallway. Please sign up by September 16. A freewill offering will be taken to help defray costs and expenses.

FALL LEAF TOUR: Larry Hetrick has volunteered to take the church bus out for a fall leaf tour when the colors reach their peak. If you’re interested, please sign up on the sheet by the church office and include your phone number. We will let you know when the tour is arranged.

TODAY we start our fall education programs. All  teachers in all our education programs (Sunday School, Release Time Classes, ABC Preschool and Bible studies) will be installed at the 8:00 a.m. service. Sunday School classes are held from 9:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m., then we’ll have some fun and games until 10:45 a.m. right before the polka fest. Adults can join Pastor Neubauer in the social hall for a look through the Catechism. Sarah Newton leads a women’s Bible Study, “Pew Sisters” in the library. 

CHUCK THIEL and the Jolly Ramblers are back to play a polka service for us today at 11:00 a.m. They will continue playing polka favorites for an hour during the dinner following. We are having potluck for the meal and everyone is welcome to bring your favorite potluck dish and join us.

WE’RE LOOKING for two more Sunday School teachers for the elementary grades. If you would like to teach, please talk to Shelley Lof or one of the pastors. Thank you!

THURSDAY, September 12, the men of St. Johns Lutheran Laymen’s League will hold their annual steak fry/membership drive at 5:30 p.m. Any men who would like to join the group should bring a steak to grill and enjoy an evening of fellowship and Bible study. The LLL meets the second Thursday of each month and welcomes new members. For more information call Dave Vik at 732-0475.

WE’RE having a youth lock-in next Friday from 5:30 p.m. until Saturday at 9:00 a.m. 5th-8th graders are welcome to join in the fun until 10:00 p.m. High schoolers will stay up for games and activities and leave after breakfast Saturday morning. Questions? Talk to Pastor Newton.

YOU CAN GET free produce every Wednesday through September or October. The Food Shelf is sponsoring this program but it’s open to everyone. There are four sites around town: here at St. Johns, Calvary, American Legion and the Food Shelf. Each week there will be a variety of vegetables delivered to the sites. You can stop by from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or until they run out. Volunteers are also needed to set up, man the sites and take down each week. If you can help for one or more Wednesdays, please contact Bob Hansen at 218-699-3167 or 218-255-3538.

A CONFIRMATION ORIENTATION MEETING will be held on Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. Postcards were sent out to 7th and 8th graders with details. If you have questions, please talk to Pastor Neubauer.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our VBS staff for their hard work, patience and dedication to make the Miraculous Mission VBS fun for the kids. Thank you to those who donated food and supplies. The children had a great time learning how Jesus saves the world.

OUR CHRISTIAN LOVE is extended to the family of our oldest church member, Olga Maki, who passed away last Tuesday at the age of 102. We pray that our Lord would provide them peace and rest from their sorrow.

LEARN TO PLAY HANDBELLS! Sarah Kaufenberg is leading a two session handbell clinic on August 12 and 19 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. You must attend the first session to attend the second session. Please RSVP to Sarah at 651-260-3350.

HELP ABC with their school supply needs. Take one or more of the “leaves” from the board in the front lobby, purchase the exact items listed and return them to the church by August 18.

ABC PRESCHOOL’S Open House will be held on Thursday, August 15 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m. The staff will be on hand to answer questions and meet students

THE LAST NOON CONCERT will be held at Calvary Lutheran on Thursday, August 15 at 12:15 p.m. featuring Deane Johnson & the North Wind Clarinets celebrating a wide range of music from classical to jazz and swing. Coffee and treats are provided.

THE HUBBARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S K-9 UNIT is hosting a fish fry and auction fundraiser on Friday, August 16 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the American Legion. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. One of the auction items is four tickets to a Vikings game. Come enjoy some great fish and support the K-9 unit.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY: We are planning to conduct interviews for the assistant secretary position the week of August 26. If you are interested but haven’t let us know, please stop by the church office for details.

IT’S ALMOST POLKA TIME! Polka Fest is Sunday, September 8. Join us and the Jolly Ramblers for the service at 11:00 a.m. (note the time change) with a potluck meal to follow in the fellowship hall, where they'll play all the polka favorites. Bring your favorite potluck dish and join us!
